(About the short story titled, "The Memorial" by Gib Gibson.)

     I was very interested to read your article on the Spanish-American War. It brings to mind (a) The future - Are we heading back to imperialism? (b) My father, who fought as a corporal in the Spanish-American War. He was with the Astor Battery, so-named because it was privately financed, outfitted - even to ordnance, by Vincent Astor. This was the last such privately funded military unit. The Astor Battery took part in the Battle of Manila Hill desp [ite fact that it was an artillery outfit - armed only with sidearms because the ammunition for their howitzers had been sunk by accident in Manila Bay whilst being unloaded. Charging against entrenched Spanish forces, the battery lost almost a third of its men but still captured the redoubt. The battery's commanding officer, who orderd the insane charge, was Peyton C. March. He received the Medal of Honor amd was later Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in WW I. My father survived uninjured but always referred to March as "that idiot!"

Very clever stuff, Giovanni, you deserve a bigger audience, especially as the Washington hawks who'll not see combat are so vocal and aggressive. Jonathan Swift would approve of your work!
WE are leaving for a tour of Spain/Portugal and will be interested in checking out some of the European views of the current US administration.       Thanks Giovanni for the latest issue of the News! The poem and commentary put me to shame--I was an English literature major in college and haven't done much poetry reading/interpretation since then. I"ve always liked that poem, but have done more with Thomas Moore's music than his writing, especially around St. Patrick's Day! His Irish songs are still popular.
